ABSTRACT
In the advent of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and its integration in the Library and Information Science profession, the search for information resources by students, researchers, and even librarians is now easier and faster but then it all depends on the level of ICT or Computer literacy skills possessed by the individual(s) in search of such information resources. The aim of this study was intended to find out the strengths and weaknesses of students of Kogi State University, ICT and information literacy skills and how it affects their library use. Objectives of the study were to identify information literacy skills possessed by undergraduate students and the effects of ICTs on the development of information literacy of students. This study used a descriptive survey design and the target population comprised of 225 undergraduate students of Kogi State University, Anyigba. The sampling technique applied thumb sampling technique. Data were gathered and collected through the use of questionnaire. The findings revealed that the students of Kogi State University, Anyigba possess several information literacy skills which will enable them to effectively utilize library resources and get the best in their teaching, learning and academic pursuit. The study also revealed the benefits and effects of ICTs on the development of information literacy skills of students. The study revealed major challenges faced in the use of ICTs for skill development also which include inadequate budget for ICT facilities, inadequate ICT infrastructure, lack of electricity supply, inadequate ICT qualified staff in libraries and network access problem. The following recommendations were made from the findings such as adequate funding, provision of functional ICT facilities, training of library staff on ICT, provision of adequate electricity supply and increase in network bandwidth. Some suggestions for further research were made and the limitations encountered in the study were also mentioned.
